While there has been a lot of anticipation that the next Call of Duty: Black Ops game will start off right where the original Black Ops game left off, now we’re starting to question whether that’s true thanks to a video uploaded by YouTube star FPS Russia.
The video shows a prototype of a remote control attack drone which has been fitted with explosive ammunition and which is controlled by a tablet computer. In the video, the presenter says, “The technology in this baby isn't going to be out there for at least another decade. Looks like the future's going to be fun. But if you can't wait another 15 years my friends are telling me that this baby might just be in the next Call of Duty game, which would be the sh*t.”
What’s really interesting isn’t the video presenter’s comments but the fact that they appear to have been confirmed by Treyarch and Activision. The main official page for Call of Duty includes an image of weapon which links directly to the FPS Russia video. While this may not be significant, it seems almost impossible that it wouldn’t be—after all, how many people talk about Call of Duty in their YouTube videos? Why give special attention to this one unless there really is a solid connection between the prototype technology in the footage and the Black Ops sequel?
Originally we believed that the game would probably take place during the 1980s, following directly off of its predecessor. We figured we’d keep going with the Cold War theme. Since this technology doesn’t exist now except in prototype form, we can be pretty sure that it didn’t exist then, so it is now looking more likely that the game will take place sometime in the near future, perhaps in the next ten to fifteen years. While there was still plenty of depth to plumb with the Cold War, the nice thing about the future is that it is open ended, and there are fewer concerns with realism and accuracy. So we can definitely see where either timeframe could be fun to explore. The COD website put up a splash screen the other day promoting a reveal of the next game in just a few days on May 1st. To watch the reveal, gamers will want to tune into the basketball playoffs on TNT. This should answer our question with more certainty!
